WhatsApp vs SMS vs Email Marketing: What Actually Converts

Marketers keep asking which channel is best. The useful question is which channel fits the message — an OTP, a festive offer and a 900-word newsletter should not travel the same road.

Open and response behaviour

WhatsApp messages are typically read within minutes and reliably reach the top of the notification stack. SMS is read fast too but is one-way and text-limited. Email wins on depth and archives but loses badly on immediacy, with most promotional mail never opened.

Cost per outcome, not per send

Email looks cheapest per send and often is the most expensive per order because so little of it is seen. WhatsApp costs more per message but converts a much larger share of the audience, which usually makes its cost per order the lowest of the three.

Richness and interactivity

Only WhatsApp gives you buttons, list menus, images, catalogues and a two-way conversation in the same thread — so a customer can go from notification to question to purchase without leaving the app.

  • WhatsApp — rich media, buttons, replies, chatbots
  • SMS — plain text plus a link, no conversation
  • Email — long-form content, attachments, poor mobile urgency

The right channel for each job

Use WhatsApp for order updates, offers, support and re-engagement. Keep SMS as a fallback for customers without WhatsApp and for critical OTPs. Keep email for invoices, newsletters and documents.
